Knit for the Kids - supporting the Helen DeVos Children's Hospital Sunday, November 13, 2011 12-4pm
We
have come across an opportunity to help that we can not pass up.
Because of our last contest on facebook, we were introduced to Michelle
VanVolkinburg, a lovely young lady who is involved with knitting hats
for the kids at Helen DeVos Children's Hospital who are losing or have
lost their hair due to chemotherapy treatments. DeVos treats about 200+
kids per year, and they all could use something to cover their little
heads this coming winter and beyond.
Knit for the Kids
So here are the details for our "Knit for the Kids" event:
~ come to the store November 13 at any time between 12 and 4 to sit and knit ~ we will have extra seating than normal to accommodate everyone who wants to participate
~ you can bring yarn with you, or we definitely have suggestions if you
want to pick some up at the store (if you do bring your own, please
remember these are going on sensitive, bald, little heads...a soft
yarn--NOT wool--that is machine washable is the best for these kids) ~ we will have a lot of scraps, beads, buttons, and all kinds of ideas for embellishments to make these hats extra special
~ we will have a bunch of free patterns for you to use, and if you bring
your own, try to keep in mind, these kids will want hats that cover
their entire head...also, we are knitting for both boys and girls, from
young babies to high schoolers...all shapes, sizes, colors are needed!! ~ we are also encouraging yarn sharing between all attendees to expand the creative process
~ The Threadbender will provide coffee and cider, and anyone who attends
is more than welcome to bring any kind of finger food to pass ~ if you can't make it to the event, please feel free to use us as a drop off point if you would like to knit something at home ~ our current goal is to have 200 hats delivered before Thanksgiving (our delivery date will be decided soon)
~ DON'T KNOW HOW TO KNIT??? Come anyway to show your support! We can put
you to work adding embellishments to hats, putting color combinations
together, winding balls of yarn, making tassels, or gift wrapping hats.
We hope to see many of you here on the 13th. Stay tuned for more
details on a special guest and more information on how Michelle was
inspired by one little girl with cancer named Maddie.
